OUR STORY
It wasn’t supposed to look like this.
Then again, the interesting stories rarely do.

BEFORE UNTAMED NOMAD
There were already several lives before this one.
Hi there, I’m Erica. Welcome to Untamed Nomad.
For more than twenty years, life revolved around the countryside: smallholdings and gardens, animals and muddy boots, food and hospitality, flowers, guests, events, ideas, businesses and the perpetual belief that one more project was probably an excellent idea.
There were beautiful chapters. Difficult ones too. Things were built, lost, rebuilt and reinvented. Somewhere along the way it became very clear that life has absolutely no respect for a carefully prepared five-year plan.
A life less ordinary
I’ve never been particularly good at following the conventional route through life. I’ve always had ideas, ambitions, a love of beautiful things and an unfortunate tendency to believe that if I put my mind to something, I can probably find a way to do it.
Sometimes that’s worked out brilliantly. Other times, well, there’s probably a book in it. Actually, there is. I wrote one.
I’ve always been a free spirit. Even as a youngster, I knew I wanted to do things my own way. Not because I was rebellious for the sake of it, but because I was curious. There were so many things I wanted to try, places I wanted to see and possibilities I wanted to explore that the idea of spending my entire life doing one thing never particularly appealed.

Conventional education wasn’t for me, and becoming a mother at sixteen meant learning quite early that life doesn’t always come with the resources, opportunities or helpful instructions you might have hoped for.
But I had determination, imagination and a willingness to work bloody hard.
At twenty-seven, I got my first smallholding and embraced country life. It was the beginning of a wonderful love affair with the countryside, animals, gardens and the enormous satisfaction of creating a home and a life with my own hands.
And somewhere along the way, I discovered that I loved building businesses almost as much as I loved living in the countryside.

A lifetime of ideas, adventures and having a go
My business adventures began with selling on eBay, and from there things became considerably more interesting.
Over the years I’ve had shops, tearooms, restaurants and a boutique B&B. I published a magazine that I later sold, and even drove across Europe to Poland delivering orders for one of my businesses.
I’ve tried things, learned things, made mistakes, changed direction and occasionally wondered what on earth possessed me to think something was a good idea in the first place. But I’ve never regretted being curious.
I’ve always loved creating things. Not just businesses, but a whole way of living. A home that felt special. A life filled with animals, countryside, family, good food, flowers, Christmas magic and the everyday pleasures that make all the hard work worthwhile.

I’ve also learned that you don’t always need a fortune to make something wonderful happen.
One Christmas, when money was particularly tight, I went out picking sloe berries and sold them to pay for Christmas and dinner for the whole family. It turned out to be the last Christmas dinner we would all share together, and it’s a memory I’ll always treasure.
Sometimes the smallest, simplest things become the most precious.
The Woman That Farms

Farming became a huge part of my life. There were animals, land, muddy boots, endless responsibilities, extraordinary experiences and plenty of occasions when I wondered whether I’d taken complete leave of my senses.
It wasn’t always easy, and it certainly wasn’t glamorous every minute of the day. But I loved it.
For a long time, I shared those adventures through The Woman That Farms. I even wrote a book, Difficult Doesn’t Mean Impossible, about the extraordinary things that can happen when you refuse to accept that something can’t be done.
And I believed every word of it. I still do.
Then life had other ideas

The life I’d worked so hard to build eventually came apart.
I lost my home, my farm, my business and much of what I’d spent years creating. There were some truly awful experiences along the way, including a period when finding somewhere safe and warm to sleep became a far more immediate concern than any grand ambition.
I won’t pretend it was character-building fun. It wasn’t.
But neither do I want the worst things that have happened to me to become the most interesting things about me.
Because before all that, there was a whole life full of adventures, achievements, people, animals, mistakes, laughter and wonderful memories.
And there will be more.
THEN CAME UNTAMED NOMAD
So, what exactly is Untamed Nomad?
It’s the next chapter. Although knowing me, it may turn out to be several chapters, a few unexpected plot twists and an entirely unnecessary number of new ideas.
It’s a place for everything I love about living: beautiful homes and interiors, gardens and flowers, animals, making things, finding treasures, building businesses, discovering places, cooking, celebrating the seasons and creating little moments of magic in ordinary days.
It’s also about independence, imagination and the freedom to change your mind about what you want your life to look like.
I don’t believe we have to spend our lives waiting until everything is sorted out before we’re allowed to enjoy ourselves.
There are things to make, places to explore, adventures to have and a ridiculous number of possibilities still waiting to be discovered.
And then, of course, there are the Scottish Terriers.
Seven of them.

Demelza, Evangeline, Angus, Amelia, Hugo, Eliza and Beulah. They have their own opinions, their own ideas about how the household should operate and absolutely no intention of consulting me about any of it.
They’re a considerable part of my world, and you’ll be meeting them properly.
My daughter Molly is part of this story too. Family, belonging and creating a lovely life together have always mattered enormously to me.
The best bit? We haven’t finished yet.
I used to think success meant reaching a point where everything was finally settled. The lovely home, the business, the security, the life I’d imagined.
These days, I’m beginning to see things differently.
I still want beautiful things. I still have enormous ambitions. I still want a wonderful home, a flourishing business, adventures, laughter and plenty of reasons to get excited about tomorrow.
Possibly more than ever.
But I don’t want to put living on hold while I work towards them.
Untamed Nomad is about creating a life that’s rich in the things that matter, whatever stage we’re at. It’s about curiosity, creativity, freedom, a little mischief and finding the courage to have another go.
I’ll share the lovely bits, the ridiculous bits, the projects, the discoveries and the occasional spectacular cock-up. There will be stories from my past, plenty happening in the present and, I hope, some wonderful adventures ahead.
I’m not here because I’ve got life all figured out.
I’m here because I haven’t finished figuring out what I can make of it.
And I think that’s quite exciting.

You don’t have to wait until life is wonderful to begin living wonderfully.
Welcome to Untamed Nomad.
Here’s to magic, mischief and whatever comes next.
Come and see what happens next.
The stories, the discoveries, the lovely things and the occasional spectacular detour continue in the journal.
